What happened:
Date: 11/15/2007

•Category IV (winds up to 155mph, storm surge 17’)
• Worst in 10 years.
• Nearly 7 MILLION people affected by cyclone
• 10s of 1000s injured
• 1000s missing
• Millions of acres of crops damaged
• More than 1 million homes damaged
• Almost 10000 educational institutions damaged
Approx 1 million primary school children affected
• 600,000 not in school because of damaged/destroyed schools
Loss estimate: more than $2 BILLION US

What Agami is doing:

• Partnering with CDMC (Central Disaster Management Committee, www.thpbd.org/cyclone) and Jatiyo Tran Committee (www.trancom.org) in Bangladesh
• Disbursing funds to rebuild two schools in the Bagerhat Upazila region (Rajapur Secondary Girls’ School, Rajapur, Dhansagor, Sharonkhola, Bagerhat & R.K.D.S. Girls’ School, Raenda, Sharonkhola, Bagerhat). Specifically:

Ø  Rebuild school structure
Ø  Rebuild / replace equipment and sanitation facilities (latrines, black boards, science lab equipment)
Ø  Funds disbursed in Jan 2008
Ø  Schools to resume operation in Feb 2008
Ø  School reconstruction project target completion June 2008

• Gathering more data to understand the extent of the damages to two Agami-funded schools in Khulna (Patharkali and Bedkashi)
